All of my life I have wanted to be an educator. When I look back on my life and think about the time that had the biggest impact on me, I think of my childhood; the years when I was most impressionable, when my mind was most malleable. I think of the days when all I had to do was go to school and have fun. And when I think of the people that influenced my life, I naturally remember my teachers. It is the ones who taught me everything from tying a knot to calculating a square root that really had an influence on me. This is why I hope to some day be an educator. I want to be a positive and lasting influence in children’s lives.

I don’t remember most of the people I have met in my life, but I can recite the names of all of my teachers from grade one up to senior year of high school in order. Those people mattered to me. They had an impact on me that cannot be wiped away. I have thought of how profound it is to teach something to someone that they will carry with them for the rest of their life. I have always felt joy in helping others or showing someone something they never knew, and if I can help others, while bringing happiness into my own life, then I know I am doing something worthwhile. Teaching is a rare opportunity to achieve this balance.

When I think about my own teaching future, I cannot help but think back on the teachers who made me want to be a teacher so many years ago. They had true compassion for teaching, and they never gave up on a student. They made learning fun and interesting. They always found a way to relay the tough subject matter, even if it took 2 or 3 attempts. They took extra time after or even before school to give students the help they needed to succeed. They kept students interested with exciting demos, and lab that made a real life connection to the course material. They made the students realize that what they were learning was of value. These are some of the attitudes and actions I will employ as an educator. While this is easier said than done, I will always bear these thoughts about what my memorable teachers did when begin my teaching career.

I believe it is very important for a teacher to consider their teaching environment well before they begin teaching. My favorite teachers all took the time to create a positive learning atmosphere. This included hanging posters on the walls, keeping the room well-lit, and hanging relevant course information where it can clearly, and quickly be referenced. I plan on hanging posters on the walls of my classroom that show my interests as a person but also relate back to the topics I will be covering. For example, a Beatles poster on the wall will show my love of music. Students can also make the connection that music is science. I also hope to have LOTS of plant life in the classroom. In today's world it is important to keep the environment in students minds when they make any decision. If students see plants in their classroom everyday, they may take more time to think about the plants they see in the world around them. There is also a side benefit of keeping plants in the classroom. Plants produce oxygen which is not only vital for survival but students brains' can be more focused and work more efficiently when the proper level of oxygen is available. Also plant life can be connected to all sorts of science course work.

I have always believed that a good teacher does more than simply relay the material. A teacher that truly touches the lives of children, will cover the curriculum, while being a positive role-model and teaching students life-lessons by example. Since completing my undergrad I have been doing whatever I can to become involved in young peoples lives. From coaching to substitute teaching, I have found ways to get involved with the youth. Through this involvement I have found that I have a knack to be the teacher that touches lives. By getting to really know my students and players, I have been able to not only help students with school material but also I have become a positive role model. My goal is to one day be the teacher that student think back and say, “He really made a difference in my life.” And maybe I will be the influential teacher that inspires a student to become an educator as well.
